Meet the Board: Robert Banner
After studying law at King’s College London, Sheffield-born Robert Banner retired at the beginning of this year after a long and highly successful legal career.
He was a recognised Legal 500 personal injury lawyer, and was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the local business community in 2019.
His main passion however, was in the management of law firms. He set up his legal practice in Chesterfield in Derbyshire with one office and a team of seven. Until his retirement he was involved in the running of the firm in a managerial capacity, during which time the firm grew to one with seven offices and 135 staff.
He was privileged to be elected to the Law Management Section of The Law Society in 2010 and served as Chair for four years, thus becoming the longest standing Chairman.
His other passion was to help sole practitioners and smaller firms who don’t have the management infrastructure to deal with time consuming management. He was on the original steering committee of the Small Firms Division of The Law Society which was ultimately set up eight years ago. He is co-opted as a former chair of the Law Management Section to sit on the committee of the Small Firms Division.
Having enjoyed his time in the legal profession tremendously, The Solicitors’ Charity, in addition to his work at The Law Society, is another ideal opportunity for Robert to put something back into the profession.
“I’m delighted to be joining the Board of The Solicitors’ Charity, who are here for solicitors when times get tough and I am very much looking forward to helping those lawyers in need.
I hope to use my management experience to raise the visibility of The Solicitors’ Charity and to help the charity have a more focused marketing strategy.”
