The Solicitors’ Charity Celebrates International Women’s Day 2025

At The Solicitors’ Charity, we witness the dedication of women in the solicitors’ profession every day. This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment” speaks to the heart of what we do. We know how demanding a solicitors’ career can be, and we are constantly inspired by the resilience of women.

International Women’s Day 2025 is a time to celebrate these achievements, but also to acknowledge the challenges that many women in law still face. Long hours, high-pressure environments, and the constant push to meet expectations can take their toll. In these moments, knowing that support is available can make all the difference.

In 2024, we provided £1.1m in direct grants and services to solicitors in need, supporting twice the number of new clients than the previous year. Behind these numbers are real people – women who turned to us during difficult times and found the help they needed to deal with difficult situations and move forward.

This growing demand reminds us why our work matters. We will always be here to stand beside women in law, ensuring that when they need support, they have somewhere to turn.

The voices behind The Solicitors’ Charity

Anita McCallum, Director of Impact and Development at The Solicitors’ Charity, reflects on the dedication of women in the legal profession

“As a charity, we continue to support more women than men through our amazing wellbeing offer (65% women compared to 35% men in 2024). This tells me that, as a profession, it still has work to do in ensuring that women are well-supported and valued members of the workforce. That is why The Solicitors’ Charity exists, to continue to make sure every solicitor has access to the support they need in exceptional times.”

Caroline Watson, Fundraising Manager at The Solicitors’ Charity, highlights the role of fundraising in making this support possible:

“Charitable giving and donations from individuals and law firms are vital in enabling us to support solicitors and their families through difficult times. For women in the legal profession, our independent services—covering physical and mental health, financial assistance, and career support—play a crucial role in improving overall wellbeing. It is only through the generosity of our donors that we can continue making a meaningful impact, ensuring that women in law receive the support they need to thrive.”

Abigail Stidston, Head of Wellbeing and Grants at The Solicitors’ Charity, reflects on the importance of support for women in law:

“As someone who works closely with women in law every day, I know just how tough and overwhelming it can be – women often juggle so much. I’m proud of the work my colleagues and I do at The Solicitors’ Charity to make a real difference. We’re here to support them – whether it’s with their wellbeing, finances, or just knowing someone’s got their back when they need it most.”

Supporting each other, today and every day

We strongly believe that International Women’s Day is about more than just celebration and some words. It is about recognising the challenges that still exist and making sure women in law feel supported, valued, and heard.
